We laid weed fabric to suffocate weeds near the base of the plants for the first year, opted for a raised bed approach for improved soil drainage, and mixed compost into the existing soil to avoid shocking the plants that were shipped with bare roots.
All of the trees in the orchard will be dwarf varieties allowing us to plant more on the site, make pruning easier, and harvest fruit sooner. So far we have planted peach and asian pear trees along with raspberries on our site. And look forward to next weekends plans of planting grapes and plums. Patience is a virtue is a motto we'll have to keep in mind until 2-3 years from now when we'll be able to harvest our first fruit from these trees in the Central neighborhood.
A big thank you to our neighbors at Thackeray Avenue Orchard for their patience and support, we hope the budding fruit trees will be a treat every spring!
